“And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.”
Philippians 4:15-20
As much as the world talks about money, so does the Bible. Jesus serves as our guide, helping us become not only wise stewards of our finances but also generous givers, for generosity reflects the very heart of God. In concluding our series The Lowly, Pastor Ryan Schlachter emphasizes that spiritual maturity is evident in how we approach generosity toward God and others. True humility involves letting God have the final say over our finances, inviting Him into our financial decisions with open hearts.
What is the context?
- Tithing is the practice of giving 10% of one’s income, earnings, or possessions to God.
- In closing his letter, Paul thanks the Philippians for their generosity, emphasizing their ongoing support and sacrificial giving.
In order to lean into generosity, we have to understand that…
Our Generosity Bears Fruit
- While money often reveals where our hearts are, gaining wealth should never be our motive. The true purpose of giving is to bear fruit that reflects God’s work within us.
- God’s blessings transcend material gain; we are immeasurably blessed through the gift of Jesus.
- Generosity isn’t optional. For believers, it’s not a question of if we should give, but our prayer becomes what we should give.
- A fruitful life naturally leads to generous giving — to God, His church, and His people.
Our Generosity Pleases God
- We are designed to please God, however what pleases Him may sometimes stretch us beyond our comfort.
- Our offerings often come at a cost, carrying the scent of true obedience. We’re called to give in every season, not just when it’s convenient.
- God longs for lives fully surrendered. Holding back financially means we’re withholding part of ourselves. To truly please God, we offer Him everything.
Our Generosity Shows Trust In Him
- Generosity is an expression of our faith and trust in God.
- Believing that generosity leads to lack contradicts the truth of God’s promises. In Christ Jesus, we have access to the riches of God’s glory.
- God has promised to meet all our needs, even when those needs differ from our wants. His infinite resources ensure that we will always have enough.
