Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither- whatever they do prospers.
Psalm 1:1-3
This psalm juxtaposes two lifestyles for us and is a reminder of how to be blessed or made happy by God. It is a psalm to help us remember that we become unhappy when we choose to sin, treat sin casually, and mock or discredit God's word and His law for our lives. It is a warning about who we surround ourselves with and who we let influence our hearts and minds. It is a psalm to help us remember that when we cherish God’s presence and meditate on God’s words and law, we are made happy by God.When we let His Word permeate our life we become like a tree, and not just any tree, a tree that has been planted by its source of life. When we meditate on God's word, it is like a never ending river (or fount wink) within us, ready and waiting to replenish and strengthen us whenever we need it. His Words will be in our heart ready to feed our souls and help us battle through life. A tree that has fresh water always flowing nearby will not only never run dry, but it will bear fruit in its season and will not wither—and so it is with us.
When we keep his words in our hearts we bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self control (Gal 5:22); we do not grow weary, but will reap a harvest in the proper time (Gal 6:9); and we are given the strength to run the race set before us (Heb 12:1). In whatever we do we will prosper. It does not mean there won’t still be storms, but He will be with us and be our source forever. To meditate on His words and to worship Him despite our circumstances is what makes us blessed and prosperous.

Lord, we repent for the times we have chosen sin, and mocked your words or your truth. We thank you for forgiving us. Help us to love your word and to meditate on it day and night, so that we might know you more and fall deeper in love with you. Help us to worship you despite our circumstances. Thank you that we will be blessed and prosperous. Amen.
