In the Wilderness

Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.I cling to you;  your right hand upholds me.
Psalm 63:3, 5, 7-8

Have you ever been so hungry, but you can’t decide what to eat? There’s nothing in the fridge that makes a complete meal, and then I scroll through Seamless and nothing feels right. By the time I find something that sounds somewhat appetizing, too much time has passed and I've filled myself with chips and guac. We’ve all been there. Why, when we’re at our hungriest, is it the most difficult to find something that will satisfy?

Why is it that when I’m at my most vulnerable, it can be hard to reach out to God? I go looking around for comfort in friends, in the media, in books, in exercise, but don’t run to the Father?I

n Psalm 63, we see David at his most vulnerable. He is hiding in the wilderness as his son Absalom, the King of Israel, was out to kill him. As David is out in the desert, he fills his mind and spirit with the fundamental truths of who God is. He finds relief in knowing that God quenches all thirsts and rests in the everlasting love given to him. The more I grow satisfied in Christ, the more my faith’s capacity is stretched.

My worship grows and deepens when it happens in the wilderness.

Just like David, we can find relief as we praise God. In the anxiety, the sickness, the unemployment, He is there. What would life look like if I invited Him into the wilderness alongside me instead of trying to create my own water source? When I partner with Christ, knowing that His right hand upholds me, I enter into a deeper relationship that supports me when I come out of the wilderness and prepares me for when I may enter it again.

God, I pray for a spirit like David's that seeks you even in the darkest days. Let your constant source of love, steadfast comfort, and mighty power bring me peace in the unknown. Thank you for always being available to me and for giving us your son, Jesus. Because of Him, through Him, and by Him, I have everything my heart desires. Amen.
